The following course requirements will be graded:
- Participation in classes, including attendance and involvement in discussions – 10 % of the final grade
- Interim Group Project “Today’s Kyiv: Coexistence of Opposites” (presented by 2-3 students, depending on the final number of course participants). May 28-29 2011 coincides with the “Days of Kyiv” festival, which includes public celebrations, concerts, exhibitions, street performances etc. Students are encouraged to take part in the event, analyze their observations / findings and formulate short presentations on their impressions. Presentations can be related to folk culture, history of Kyiv, image of the city, local discourse, architecture, etc., and should be based primarily on students’ own observations of often conflicting historical/modern tandem of Ukraine’s capital culture. Before “Days of Kyiv” students will be provided with a program of events and happenings, and can choose to participate in those activities that interest them most. Presentations will be held at NaUKMA on May 29 (approx. 10-15 min each + discussion) – 20 % of the final grade
- Interim Group Project “Strategic Development of Lviv: Capitalizing the City’s Historical Legacy by 2020” (presented by 2-3 students, depending on the final number of course participants). During a 3 day trip to Lviv region (2 days in Lviv and 1 day in the Carpathian mountains) the students will take part in the current effort to "brand" the city. The case study involves understanding the positioning of the city in the European economy, its political place in contemporary Ukraine, its cultural influence on the country's history. After the series of meetings, tours and discussions students will be asked to design and present a branding strategy for Lviv through 2020 – 30 % of the final grade
- Final Group Project (presented by 2-3 students, depending on the final number of course participants). Students choose the topic of their presentation from any of the issues raised during the in-class sessions that relate Ukraine’s ongoing transformation. Students may suggest presentation topics during the course as long as they are related to the course sections. The deadline for group formation and topic selection is June 1 with 20-30 minute presentations scheduled for June 6.
